Strawn, Texas located on State Highways 16 and 108 was founded around 1880 by the Strawn and Stuart families. Strawn used to be two different communities, Russell's Pocket and Davidsonville until they merged around 1890. Oil was discovered in 1895 but wasn't developed until 1915. In 1903 the first coal mine was founded by the Johnson brothers and later sold to Ft. Worth interests. Between 1910 and 1920 the two mines in Strawn produced 1.6 million tons of coal. The town's population as of 2000 was 739. Strawn is located 160 miles from the state capital and 1327 miles from the nation's capital.
