Due to COVID-19, Strawn ISD has several new procedures in place to protect your child's health, many of which concern our Cafeteria. Please familiarize yourself with the following information: • Please have your child practice opening containers and packages to minimize our cafeteria monitors' contact with your child's food. • There will be no microwave in our cafeteria this year. Please keep that in mind as you pack your child's lunch. If a student brings a frozen meal, he will instead be served a hot lunch from the cafeteria. • No outside food or drink. Students may bring a lunch from home, but parents/students may not bring food from Pac-A-Sac, etc. onto our campus. Any leftover food or drinks must be thrown away before entering the building. Only bottled water is allowed on campus. • The Strawn Cafeteria will not have a Snack Cart this year. JH & HS may bring individually packaged snacks from home to eat in the classroom at the designated time, but they may not share with any other student. • Students will wear a face mask/shield/gaiter to the cafeteria but may take it off while eating. • The cafeteria line has placement stickers to help students stay 6 feet apart while getting their food, and their ID number will be manually entered by staff so they are not all touching the keypad. • Students will be seated every other seat at the table to distance as much as possible. • Tables will be sanitized with a bleach water solution between classes. *** Virtual learners may pick up to-go lunches each week day at 10:30 AM.

The end of school is the perfect occasion for a party, but that's hard to do when school has been closed and there are social distancing stipulations in place. 4th and 5th Grade teachers Mrs. Pollock, Mrs. Mallory, and Coach Cervantes had the perfect solution to that. They brought the Pizza Party to each of their students, along with uplifting signs and a whole lot of love! More photos are available on the SISD Facebook Page.

UIL Cancels All Remaining Spring Activities and State Championships With the announcement from Governor Greg Abbott that all Texas schools are to remain closed to in-person learning for the remainder of this school year, and in an effort to help protect the health and safety of Texans, the University Interscholastic League (UIL) is canceling all remaining 2019-2020 spring activities and state championships. “Our staff had been working hard on plans to resume activities this spring, but without schools in session, interscholastic activities cannot continue,” said UIL Executive Director Dr. Charles Breithaupt. “Our highest priority during this challenging time is ensuring the health and safety of our students and communities and making progress in the containment of COVID-19 in Texas. We are now turning our attention to the 2020-2021 school year.” Practices, rehearsals, and workouts remain suspended until further notice. The previously communicated information allowing remote instruction remains in place. The UIL will continue to follow the direction of state authorities and will work closely with member schools to navigate this unprecedented time. “I am grateful to the UIL staff for their leadership and dedication to students,” said UIL Legislative Council Chair Curtis Rhodes. “Together we will get through this and we look forward to the day students are once again able to participate in education-based interscholastic activities.” Further details will be forthcoming. Please continue to check the UIL website and social media accounts for updates. LINK TO PRESS RELEASE ONLINE ➡️ bit.ly/2VAzDni

Peeps Projects! Ms. Harris's 3rd Grade Class and Mrs. Milner's Kindergarten Class were assigned peeps to take care of for a week! They named them, and designed a bed and blanket for them. Third Grade did writing and grammar with theirs as well! Kindergarten built a house for their peeps, and drew and labeled the peeps' bedroom. Some even had twins! The peeps had quite the adventure with our young Greyhounds, especially with Hattie, who ate hers! She was much more caring with the replacement though!

We'd like to give a HUGE thank you to all of our staff who prepared meals and came to help hand them out! Monday, our cafeteria staff prepared 144 meals (36 bags holding 2 breakfasts and 2 lunches). Wednesday, they served 240 meals (60 bags with 2 breakfasts and 2 lunches in each), and on Friday, they distributed 120 meals (60 bags with a breakfast and a lunch in each). That makes a total of 504 meals served to our students and community this week! Our numbers were a bit off earlier in the week and those posts have been edited to reflect the correct information. Remember, if you'd like to pick up meals, you must let us know the day before - either by e-mail or through Remind. If you request meals, please make sure you come pick them up. This week we will be handing out meals on Monday and Wednesday. Friday, there will not be meal pick up due to Good Friday. Thank you to all who made our switch to online/at-home learning a smooth transition! Strawn ISD Administration and School Board have worked tirelessly with government officials and other districts' administration to give our students their best opportunity for success. Our technology director set up each student with his/her own google account and prepared Chromebooks for distribution. Newcastle ISD provided our district with 25 additional Chromebooks and around 60 cases, allowing us to send a Chromebook home with every one of our students. NISD's technology director shared information and tips on digital resources such as Google Classroom and Zoom Meetings. Our teachers have changed their teaching styles to accommodate our students home learning environments, provided packets to those without internet access, and have made themselves available through online live streams, text, call, and e-mail to answer any question students and parents might encounter. Our students' parents have worked with us to complete surveys, pick up materials, and provide the best at-home learning they can. We truly appreciate every single one of you and your contributions during this time. Our community is full of wonderful people who come together for our children. It's a great time to be a Greyhound!

Amy May, who hands out these care packages with her daughter, Emma, came today to speak with grades Pre-K through 12 about items that would be appreciated. She also shared some very touching experiences, like how something as simple as a nail file or a fork can make someone feel human again. Thank you for coming to visit with us! We will be collecting items for these packages throughout the month of March. Some ideas are non-perishable food items (Make sure cans have a pull tab!), toiletries like soap or wet wipes (Grab those freebies at hotels!), new socks, bottled water, and even the bags themselves. Kindergarten wrote about their favorite Dr. Seuss book and what they would do if the Cat in the Hat ever came to visit them. And Second Grade proudly hung their Dr. Seuss colorings in the cafeteria!

Each year, IXL recognizes the top teachers in the world. These educators were selected as top teachers based on their students' time spent on IXL. With more than 400,000 teachers using IXL worldwide, the Elite 100 truly stand out for their innovation, creativity, and passion in motivating their students to succeed. For the 2018-2019 school year, three of the Elite 100 are from Texas, and one of those is Strawn ISD's Kindergarten teacher, Mrs. Paula Milner! Congratulations, and thank you for educating and encouraging our young minds! She says, "We set goals and when we reach our goals students are rewarded with different prizes such as lunch in the classroom, slipper day or getting to sit anywhere in the class. We also use a sticker chart to hold ourselves accountable. We are good at encouraging each other. My favorite thing they say to each other is 'You got this!'" As February comes to a close, we’d like to look back on this year’s National African American History Month. As educators, we teach about the impact and importance of minorities all year, but enjoy the opportunity to reflect more consciously upon it each February. This year is the 150th anniversary of the 15th amendment, which granted the right to vote to African American men. Our history class will be diving into this today. We teach inclusion and help provide representation in our elementary classrooms by including books by Ezra Jack Keats, an author who contributed to “breaking the color barrier” in children’s literature, or “Something Beautiful” by Sharon Dennis Wyeth. By reading “Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry” and learning about important figures like Martin Luther King, Jr., Rosa Parks, and Ruby Bridges, our young students are able to see how unjust the past has been to the African American people, imagine the courage of the leaders who fought for their rights, and realize the importance of continuing to eradicate racism and prejudice in the future. In the annual proclamation, President Donald J. Trump stated, “Our great Nation is strengthened and enriched by citizens of every race, religion, color, and creed. This month, we celebrate the cultural heritage, diverse contributions, and unbreakable spirit of African Americans. We commend the heroes, pioneers, and common Americans who tirelessly fought for — and firmly believed in — the promise of racial equality granted by our Creator, enshrined in our Constitution, and enacted into our laws. We pledge to continue to stand against the evils of bigotry, intolerance, and hatred so that we may continue in our pursuit of a more perfect Union.” Read the full proclamation here: https://www.whitehouse.gov/presidential-actions/proclamation-national-african-american-history-month-2020/

Strawn ISD applied for the 2019-2021 School Safety Security Grant that was included in Senate Bill 500 from the 86th Texas Legislature. All funds available are to be utilized for school safety and security. After completing a safety assessment of Strawn ISD, we determined that updated perimeter security fencing was the best choice. We have been working with BUZZ Custom Fence with development, proposals, and installation. Additional security fencing around Strawn School campus will continue and be completed by the end of the 2019-2020 academic school year.
