We'd like to give a HUGE thank you to all of our staff who prepared meals and came to help hand them out! Monday, our cafeteria staff prepared 144 meals (36 bags holding 2 breakfasts and 2 lunches). Wednesday, they served 240 meals (60 bags with 2 breakfasts and 2 lunches in each), and on Friday, they distributed 120 meals (60 bags with a breakfast and a lunch in each). That makes a total of 504 meals served to our students and community this week! Our numbers were a bit off earlier in the week and those posts have been edited to reflect the correct information. Remember, if you'd like to pick up meals, you must let us know the day before - either by e-mail or through Remind. If you request meals, please make sure you come pick them up. This week we will be handing out meals on Monday and Wednesday. Friday, there will not be meal pick up due to Good Friday. To pick up meals Monday, please send an email Sunday to nmontgomery@strawnschool.net or text through the Remind, requesting how many sack meals you need per family. These will be available from 11:00 AM - 12:00 noon. Form a drive through line in the new gym parking lot, remain in your car, and Strawn ISD staff will deliver your meals to you! ***To join our Remind where you can request your meals through text, type 81010 in the recipients bar and @h9ckck in the message. Once joined, you can send a text requesting the number of meals you would like to pick up.

Thank you to all who made our switch to online/at-home learning a smooth transition! Strawn ISD Administration and School Board have worked tirelessly with government officials and other districts' administration to give our students their best opportunity for success. Our technology director set up each student with his/her own google account and prepared Chromebooks for distribution. Newcastle ISD provided our district with 25 additional Chromebooks and around 60 cases, allowing us to send a Chromebook home with every one of our students. NISD's technology director shared information and tips on digital resources such as Google Classroom and Zoom Meetings. Our teachers have changed their teaching styles to accommodate our students home learning environments, provided packets to those without internet access, and have made themselves available through online live streams, text, call, and e-mail to answer any question students and parents might encounter. Our students' parents have worked with us to complete surveys, pick up materials, and provide the best at-home learning they can. We truly appreciate every single one of you and your contributions during this time. Our community is full of wonderful people who come together for our children. It's a great time to be a Greyhound!

Some ideas are non-perishable food items (Make sure cans have a pull tab!), toiletries like soap or wet wipes (Grab those freebies at hotels!), new socks, bottled water, and even the bags themselves. As February comes to a close, we’d like to look back on this year’s National African American History Month. As educators, we teach about the impact and importance of minorities all year, but enjoy the opportunity to reflect more consciously upon it each February. This year is the 150th anniversary of the 15th amendment, which granted the right to vote to African American men. Our history class will be diving into this today. We teach inclusion and help provide representation in our elementary classrooms by including books by Ezra Jack Keats, an author who contributed to “breaking the color barrier” in children’s literature, or “Something Beautiful” by Sharon Dennis Wyeth. By reading “Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry” and learning about important figures like Martin Luther King, Jr., Rosa Parks, and Ruby Bridges, our young students are able to see how unjust the past has been to the African American people, imagine the courage of the leaders who fought for their rights, and realize the importance of continuing to eradicate racism and prejudice in the future. In the annual proclamation, President Donald J. Trump stated, “Our great Nation is strengthened and enriched by citizens of every race, religion, color, and creed. This month, we celebrate the cultural heritage, diverse contributions, and unbreakable spirit of African Americans. We commend the heroes, pioneers, and common Americans who tirelessly fought for — and firmly believed in — the promise of racial equality granted by our Creator, enshrined in our Constitution, and enacted into our laws. We pledge to continue to stand against the evils of bigotry, intolerance, and hatred so that we may continue in our pursuit of a more perfect Union.” Read the full proclamation here: https://www.whitehouse.gov/presidential-actions/proclamation-national-african-american-history-month-2020/
