As February comes to a close, we’d like to look back on this year’s National African American History Month. As educators, we teach about the impact and importance of minorities all year, but enjoy the opportunity to reflect more consciously upon it each February.
This year is the 150th anniversary of the 15th amendment, which granted the right to vote to African American men. Our history class will be diving into this today. We teach inclusion and help provide representation in our elementary classrooms by including books by Ezra Jack Keats, an author who contributed to “breaking the color barrier” in children’s literature, or “Something Beautiful” by Sharon Dennis Wyeth. By reading “Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry” and learning about important figures like Martin Luther King, Jr., Rosa Parks, and Ruby Bridges, our young students are able to see how unjust the past has been to the African American people, imagine the courage of the leaders who fought for their rights, and realize the importance of continuing to eradicate racism and prejudice in the future.
In the annual proclamation, President Donald J. Trump stated, “Our great Nation is strengthened and enriched by citizens of every race, religion, color, and creed. This month, we celebrate the cultural heritage, diverse contributions, and unbreakable spirit of African Americans. We commend the heroes, pioneers, and common Americans who tirelessly fought for — and firmly believed in — the promise of racial equality granted by our Creator, enshrined in our Constitution, and enacted into our laws. We pledge to continue to stand against the evils of bigotry, intolerance, and hatred so that we may continue in our pursuit of a more perfect Union.” Read the full proclamation here: https://www.whitehouse.gov/presidential-actions/proclamation-national-african-american-history-month-2020/

Strawn ISD applied for the 2019-2021 School Safety Security Grant that was included in Senate Bill 500 from the 86th Texas Legislature. All funds available are to be utilized for school safety and security. After completing a safety assessment of Strawn ISD, we determined that updated perimeter security fencing was the best choice. We have been working with BUZZ Custom Fence with development, proposals, and installation. Additional security fencing around Strawn School campus will continue and be completed by the end of the 2019-2020 academic school year.
